SANTORINI

The island of Santorini is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption), which occurred some 3,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization and may have led indirectly to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, 110 km (68 mi) to the south, through the creation of a gigantic tsunami Another popular theory holds that the Thera eruption is the source of the legend of Atlantis.

In this pyrotechnic musical, the Celebration Displays design team have tried to recreate with fireworks the awesome power of that volcanic eruption. Starting off with gentle fast flowing candles depicting the first "early warning" signs of imminent danger - leading to giant comet eruptions as the volcano "blows." AS the music progresses, we see the natural course of a volcanic eruption being played out.The gentle middle section, the fireworks sequence mirrors the quietening down of the volcano after the initial eruptions of molten lava. But is this just the calm before the storm?  Click to play ... and see for yourself.
